Market Overview:
The global shrink sleeve labels market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for shrink sleeve labels from the food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, and personal care industries. In addition, the growing trend of product customization is also contributing to the growth of this market. On the basis of type, PVC accounted for a major share of the global shrink sleeve labels market in 2017. This can be attributed to its properties such as high clarity and gloss levels, good abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance. PET-G is another major type segment in this market and is expected to grow at a higher rate than other types during the forecast period owing to its properties such as high tensile strength and toughness coupled with low weight. On the basis of application, food & beverage was by far largest segment in terms of revenue generated by shrink sleeve labels in 2017 followed by pharmaceuticals and personal care segments respectively.
Product Definition:
Shrink sleeve labels are a type of pressure-sensitive label that is most commonly used on cylindrical containers, such as bottles and cans. The labels are manufactured with a thin film of plastic or polymer that shrinks when heated, which allows them to tightly conform to the contours of the container.
PVC:
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a thermoplastic polymer. It is produced from the reaction of phthalic anhydride and vinyl chloride in the presence of sodium hypochlorite or other sources of chlorine. PVC can be characterized as a rigid, clear, plastic with excellent chemical & electrical resistance and high flexibility at low temperatures.
PET-G:
PET-G, or Polyethylene Terephthalate-Glass is a type of plastic that contains glass in its polymer chain. It has superior properties such as flexibility and transparency like glass but can be processed like PET. It also shares similar chemical and mechanical properties with PET making it an ideal choice for applications requiring both high strength and toughness along with the optical clarity required by consumers.
Application Insights:
The food and beverage application segment accounted for the largest revenue share of over 30% in 2017. The product is widely used to shrink bottles, cans, PET-based drinks and other packaging materials such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products and others.
The pharmaceutical application segment is expected to witness the fastest growth rate over the forecast period owing to its non-toxicity towards plasticizers which are used in manufacturing PVC based plastics. Moreover, it offers excellent clarity along with high resistance towards oxygen & light rays which makes it suitable for drug packaging applications.
Other applications include electronic equipment & appliances (such as washing machines), household care products (such as dishwashers) and automotive parts (such as air intake manifolds).
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth of this region can be attributed to rising product demand from various end-use industries, such as food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, personal care and others. China is one of the major countries contributing towards regional growth owing to presence of a large number of manufacturers coupled with low manufacturing cost in this country.
North America is also likely to witness significant growth over the coming years owing to increasing awareness about health benefits associated with specific packaging materials used for food products and medicines among consumers. Europe was estimated as second largest regional market in terms of revenue after Asia Pacific on account high consumption levels regarding shrink sleeve labels across major countries including Germany, U.K.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from FMCG sector: The global FMCG market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.4% during the forecast period, reaching a value of USD 6.5 trillion by 2021. This is due to the increasing disposable income and changing lifestyle of consumers across the globe. Shrink sleeve labels are extensively used in the FMCG sector for product branding and identification purposes. Thus, the increasing demand from this sector is expected to drive the growth of shrink sleeve labels market during the forecast period.
- Rising popularity of craft beers: The global craft beer market is growing at a rapid pace and is projected to reach a value of USD 79 billion by 2025. Shrink sleeve labels are widely used on craft beers for product branding and differentiation purposes among competitors in this segmented market space .Thus, rising popularity of craft beers is anticipated to fuel growth prospects for shrink sleeve labels market over next few years .
