It has a small body, around 10% the size of an average human hair, and is designed to be used in integrated circuits (ICs) where high-precision resistors are required. The 0402 mm design was developed by Philips in the early 1960s for use in their audio compact discs.


The first production 0402 mm products were offered by Micronas.


0603 mm:


0603 mm is a standard micro-miniaturization of the metric system. It means that 0603 mm resistors are 1/16th the size of an inch, or 2.54 cm. The typical value for 0603 mm resistors is 1 kohm (1,000 Ohms).


The most common applications for SMD thin film resistors are in LED drivers.
