Market Overview:
The global sterile injectables market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, rising demand for biologics and biosimilars, and growing number of approvals for new products. Based on type, the global sterile injectables market is segmented into large molecules and small molecules. The large molecule segment is expected to account for the majority share of the global sterile injectables market in 2018. This segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.8% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030 due to increasing demand for monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and other large molecules used in therapies such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, central nervous systems (CNS), infectious disorders, and musculoskeletal disorders. Based on application, the global sterile injectables market is divided into five segments: cancer therapeutics; diabetes therapeutics; cardiovascular diseases therapeutics; CNS therapeutics; and other applications (infectious disorders & musculoskeletal disorders). The cancer therapeutics segment accounted for the largest share of this market in 2017 owing to rising incidence rates of various types of cancers across regions worldwide coupled with increasing adoption rates of novel anticancer drugs/therapies by physicians globally.
Product Definition:
A sterile injectable is a drug or other therapeutic agent that is injected into a patient, usually by means of an injection. The term "sterile injectables" generally refers to pharmaceuticals that are in liquid form and are intended for injection into the body intravenously (into a vein), intramuscularly (into muscle), or subcutaneously (under the skin).
Large Molecules:
Large molecules are injectable drugs that are made up of more than 50% amide groups. They have a high volume and low surface area which results in lower permeability to the surrounding medium. The large size of these molecules helps them to remain longer in the blood circulation and tissue, thus increasing its duration of action.
Small Molecules:
Small molecules are the most basic and common type of injectable drugs. They can be administered by either intravenous or subcutaneous route. The small size of these molecules allows them to easily pass through the cell membranes and reach their target cells, which in turn enhances their therapeutic effect. These are available in both non-sterile (generally used) as well as sterile formulae depending on the regulatory requirements of a particular country/ region.
Application Insights:
The cancer segment dominated the global sterile injectables market in 2017, accounting for over 41.0% share of the total revenue. Increasing prevalence of cancer across the globe is expected to be a major factor driving growth during the forecast period. According to WHO, it is estimated that around 1 in 6 women and 1 in 5 men are estimated to develop some form of cancer during their lifetime globally. Rising cases of breast and prostate cancers are expected to further boost demand for these products over the forecast period as they require frequent medication throughout treatment course duration.
According to data published by NCBI, around 8-12% patients suffering from chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes require regular injections with drugs every 2-4 weeks throughout their life span which will increase demand for sterilized vials & syringes respectively especially among diabetic patients undergoing long term treatment course at hospitals or clinics where multiple daily doses become tiresome.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. The presence of sophisticated healthcare infrastructure, high patient awareness levels coupled with relatively higher healthcare spending in this region are some of the factors responsible for its large share. In addition, increasing R&D activities by various companies to develop novel products and improve existing ones is also expected to propel growth over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is estimated to be one of the fastest growing regions during the forecast period owing to rising disposable income and improving economic conditions especially in emerging countries such as China & India which are major consumers of these products. Growing target population base along with an increase in life expectancy has also contributed significantly towards regional growth rate over past few years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of chronic diseases: The global prevalence of chronic diseases is increasing at an alarming rate. This is primarily because of the changing lifestyles and dietary habits of people across the world. The increase in the incidence of chronic diseases is expected to drive the demand for sterile injectables in the coming years.
- Technological advancements: The sterile injectables market is witnessing rapid technological advancements, with new products being launched regularly. This is helping to improve patient outcomes and increase compliance rates. Such technological advances are likely to fuel market growth in the coming years.
- Rising geriatric population: A large number of people are now living beyond 65 years, which has led to a rise in the geriatric population worldwide. This group is particularly susceptible to various chronic diseases, such as cancer and diabetes mellitus, which require regular injections for treatment purposes These factors are expected to propel demand for sterile injectables over the forecast period .
