Market Overview:
The global temporary pacing lead market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing incidence of cardiac arrhythmias, technological advancements in temporary pacing leads, and rising demand for minimally invasive procedures. Based on type, the global temporary pacing lead market is segmented into unipolar and bipolar leads. The unipolar leads segment is expected to account for a larger share of the market than the bipolar leads segment during the forecast period. This can be attributed to their lower cost and easy availability compared with bipolar leads. Based on application, the global temporary pacing lead market is divided into pediatric and adult applications.
Product Definition:
A temporary pacing lead is a short, thin wire that is inserted through a vein in the arm and threaded through to the heart. It is used to help maintain a regular heartbeat when someone's own heart rhythm is not stable.
Unipolar:
Unipolar temporary pacing lead is a small, lightweight device used to pace an area of the heart that is not functioning properly. It can be used in place of permanent pacemaker and hence finds greater application in case of second or third attempt at cardiac surgery. The unipolar temporary pacing lead has two electrodes - one for receiving electrical signals from the patient’s heart and other for delivering electrical signals to the patient’s heart.
Bipolar:
Bipolar temporary pacing lead is a medical device used to pace an area of the heart that is not able to be reached by normal leads. The bipolar lead has two electrodes connected by a wire, which allows for better electrical connection than standard leads. It also helps in providing accurate and effective results as compared to other pacing devices.
Application Insights:
The pediatric segment accounted for the largest revenue share in 2016 and is anticipated to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth of this segment can be attributed to increasing use of DPLs by parents for infant pacemakers as well as adult patients with heart disorders.
The growing prevalence of obesity and other cardiac disorders among children coupled with rising number of pediatric surgeries is expected to drive demand from this segment. In addition, high success rate associated with DPL implantation in pediatric patients is projected to propel its demand over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. The presence of key players, favorable reimbursement policies, and increasing awareness about pediatric cardiac disorders are some of the factors responsible for its largest share. In addition, growing number of FDA approvals is also expected to contribute toward its large share over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness lucrative growth over the coming years owing to rising healthcare expenditure and improving infrastructure in this region. Moreover, increasing prevalence of congenital heart diseases is also expected to drive demand for temporary pacing devices during the forecast period as these devices help prevent sudden cardiac arrests that may lead to death in infants with CHD’s condition who experience palpitations or premature ventricular contractions (PVC).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of cardiac arrhythmias: The global incidence of cardiac arrhythmias is increasing at a significant rate, owing to the changing lifestyle and dietary habits. This is propelling the demand for temporary pacing leads, as they are used for diagnosing and treating various types of cardiac arrhythmias.
- Growing geriatric population: The global geriatric population is growing at a rapid pace and this is leading to an increase in the prevalence of age-related heart diseases such as congestive heart failure (CHF) and Atrial Fibrillation (AF). This is boosting the demand for temporary pacing leads as they are extensively used in the treatment of these conditions.
- Technological advancements: Temporary pacing lead manufacturers are constantly investing in R&D to develop innovative products that can meet the needs of their customers effectively. This has resulted in several technological advancements being made in this market, which is benefiting its growth significantly.
- Rising healthcare expenditure: There has been a significant rise in healthcare expenditure across all regions over the past few years, owing to rising awareness about health issues and improving economic conditions worldwide. This is fueling growth in the temporary pacing lead market as more people are now able to afford these devices/procedures.. 5
