A thermopile is a device used to measure the temperature of a object. It is made up of multiple thermocouples connected in series. The importance of a thermopile is that it can be used to measure very small changes in temperature, making it ideal for use in devices such as thermostats.

Type E is also known as the negative type because its flow direction is opposite to that of normal steam pipes (from hot to cold).

Type J is the most common form of thermopile and it's used in almost all types of thermopiles. Type J is a two-dimensional crystal structure made up of many small needles or prisms, which are heated at one end and can be cooled down at the other end. The shape allows maximum surface area for heat transfer.
