A thyristor is a semiconductor device with four layers of alternating N- and P-type material. When a voltage is applied to the device, current flows through it in one direction. If the voltage is then reversed, the current flow stops abruptly.

The switching device or thyristor is a solid-state component that can be operated as an electrical switch and can be turned on or off, depending upon the voltage applied to it. GTO is the gate-oxide semiconductor effect and it occurs when an electric current is passed through a material that has been exposed to high voltage. The GTO causes the breakdown of insulation in electrical wires or components which leads to short circuits and ultimately damage.
