Market Overview:
The global tight gas market is expected to grow from USD XX million in 2018 to USD XX million by 2030, at a CAGR of XX%. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for processed and unprocessed tight gas across different applications. The processed tight gas segment is expected to hold the largest share of the globaltight gas market in 2018. This segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period.
Product Definition:
A gas that is difficult to extract because it is trapped in a small or tight reservoir. Tight gas wells have low production rates and require more expensive extraction techniques than conventional gas wells.
Processed Tight Gas:
Processed tight gas is a form of unconventional gas that contains high proportion of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. It has low viscosity and therefore it can be easily extracted from the ground. The major advantage associated with this type of natural gas is that it can be easily transported to market over large distances without undergoing any significant changes in pressure or volume. This factor makes it suitable for use as a feedstock in various industries such as chemical, power generation, fertilizers manufacturing etc.
Unprocessed Tight Gas:
Unprocessed tight gas is a type of unconventional gas that is captured in low-permeability source rocks. Unprocessed tight gas can be found in several sedimentary basins across the globe including North America, China, Argentina and Australia. The majority of these reservoirs are present offshore but some onshore fields also exist such as those present in the U.S. states of Alaska and California along with parts of Canada and Mexico.
Application Insights:
The residential application segment accounted for the largest share of over 40% in 2017. The growing population and rapid urbanization have led to an increased demand for natural gas as a fuel in the residential sector across countries such as China, India, and Mexico. Furthermore, increasing government initiatives towards promoting investments in LNG-based power generation plants are expected to drive market growth over the forecast period.
Commercial applications include large industrial units that consume large volumes of natural gas daily along with small commercial units including restaurants and hotels that use it for cooking or heating purposes. Growing usage of LPG as a fuel source by commercial establishments is anticipated to reduce its consumption by around 10% globally owing to switching from traditional fuels such as wood and coal which were used previously for this purpose.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global tight gas market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The presence of large scale shale gas reserves coupled with favorable government regulations is anticipated to drive regional growth. China, Australia, India, and New Zealand are some of the countries where significant tight gas resources have been identified.
The Asia Pacific region has witnessed a growing demand for natural gas as a fuel source due to increasing industrialization and population along with rising energy requirements in emerging economies such as China and India. In addition, factors such as low prices of Tight Gas relative to conventional natural gas are likely to further increase its consumption across industries including power generation, residential sector etc.
Europe accounted for approximately 20% of total market share in terms of volume consumed during 2017 on account high economic development along with technological advancements observed within individual countries such as Germany & U.K.
Growth Factors:
- Increased demand from developing countries for energy, as they undergo industrialization and modernization.
- Rising prices of conventional fuels such as oil and gas, which makes tight gas more economically viable to produce.
- Technological advances in drilling and extraction that make it possible to extract tight gas reserves at a lower cost.
- Government policies that incentivize the production of tight gas, through tax breaks or other measures.
