A Tin Catalyst is a type of chemical agent used to speed up or initiate the rate of a reaction. They are often used in the production of plastics, pharmaceuticals and other synthetic materials. The importance of tin catalysts is that they can greatly improve the efficiency and yield of many chemical processes, resulting in lower costs and increased production.


Inorganic Tin catalysts:


Inorganic tin catalysts are chemical compounds containing one or more tin atom. These catalysts can be used in organic reactions and have a higher activity than organic counterparts. The most common type of catalyst is SnO2, commonly known as stannous oxide, which has high surface area and low particle size compared to other types of oxides such as ruthenium or iridium oxide.


Organic Tin catalysts:


Organic tin catalysts are used in the preparation of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), a.k.a. tin foil, by using an organic compound as a catalyst during the reaction process which takes place between Tin (IV) oxide and Dichloroethylene Monopropylene Oxide to produce PVDF on account of its superior properties such as low cost, high thermal stability and resistance towards hydrolysis & oxidation.


Application Insights:


The application segment includes polyurethane foam, coating, elastomer, adhesive and resin. Polyurethane foams emerged as the largest application segment in 2017 and is projected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period. The product has a high demand from residential & commercial insulation applications owing to its excellent thermal & mechanical properties coupled with low cost of production.


Coating was another prominent application segment accounting for 22% of total volume in 2017 due to increasing automotive production especially in China Japan.
