Market Overview:
The global titanium-based alloys market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for titanium-based alloys in the airline industry, power stations, military, and other applications. In terms of type, the alpha titanium alloy segment is expected to lead the global titanium-based alloys market during the forecast period. In terms of application, the airline industry segment is projected to lead the global market during 2018–2030.
Product Definition:
Titanium-based alloys are a family of materials that contain titanium as the primary alloying element. They have a wide range of applications, including aerospace, automotive, medical and sporting goods.
Alpha Titanium Alloy:
Alpha titanium alloy is a new addition to the titanium family. It was developed by adding small quantities of other metals to titanium. The result is an alloy with better mechanical properties at a relatively low cost. Alpha alloys have been used in applications where high strength and corrosion resistance are required, such as turbine blades for gas turbines and marine propellers, because of their ability to withstand higher temperatures than beta or gamma alloys without deforming or losing their shape.
Beta Titanium Alloy:
Beta titanium alloy is a member of the titanium family. It has properties such as high strength, corrosion resistance and excellent hardness. The beta condition shows low absorption coefficient and good weldability in comparison with alpha titanium alloys. Beta Titanium can be used for applications where high-strength, lightweight materials are required along with good corrosion resistance and hardenability.
Application Insights:
The airline industry was the largest application segment in 2017 and accounted for 34.1% of the total revenue share. The product is widely used in aircraft components including landing gear doors, engine cowls, body-in-white, airframe panels and leading and trailing edge flaps on each side of an aircraft. Titanium based alloys are also used to manufacture structural parts of an aircraft such as a door frame that requires high strength with light weight.
Demand from other applications segments include power stations (grid storage), military (armored vehicles & tanks) and industrial machinery & equipment manufacturing industries (turbine blades). In power stations, titaniumbased alloys are mainly used for making electrical equipment such as transformers that operate at high temperatures over 1,200°C.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest market in 2016 and accounted for a revenue share of over 45%. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing titanium consumption in various applications, including aerospace, automotive, energy & power generation sectors.
The demand for titanium-based alloys in North America is projected to grow at a significant rate from 2017 to 2030 owing to growing use of these products in wind turbines and solar panels. In addition, rising need for lightweight materials with superior strength properties will drive industry growth over the coming years.
Europe was another major consumer as it has been one of the leading producers of automobiles since ancient times coupled with technological advancements made by companies such as Volkswagen Group; BMW AG; Mercedes Benz AG; Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.; Ferrari S.pA.; Renault SNCF SA; Daimler AG etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from aerospace and defense sectors
- Growing popularity of titanium alloys in medical implants and prosthetics
- Rising demand for lightweight materials in automotive industry
- Increasing use of titanium alloys in construction and infrastructure projects
- Growing consumption of titanium alloys in consumer electronics
