Trichloroethylene is an organic compound and it's a colorless, toxic, flammable liquid. Trichloroethylene can be produced by the reaction of dichloromethane with trichloroacetic acid or by the chlorination of ethylene. It has a strong odor similar to that of bleach and causes severe skin irritation when directly exposed to its vapor or gas form.
Perchloroethylene:
Perchloroethylene (PCE) is an organic compound and colorless liquid. It has a slight odor similar to that of gasoline. Perchloroethylene is soluble in ethyl ether, alcohol, and water; however, it is insoluble in diethyl ether or hexane. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified perchloroethylene as a possible carcinogen to humans by reason of its genotoxicity property.
Application Insights:
Degreasers were the major application segment and accounted for over 60% of the global market share in terms of volume in 2017. The product is used as a solvent for cleaning greases, oils, dirt and corrosion from various surfaces including metal, glass fiber reinforced plastic and rubber. It is also used as an agent for deflocculation when water-based systems are utilized to remove oil based stains or contamination from many other surfaces such as paper towels, fabrics or skin.
Hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants are anticipated to emerge as one of the fastest-growing applications on account of its rising demand due to its properties that include high thermal stability & low boiling point along with excellent chemical & electrical insulation which makes it suitable for use in air conditioners & heat ventilation air handling units (HVAC).
