Product Definition:
The mineral trona is a natural sodium carbonate and hydrogencarbonate salt, Na3H(CO3)2. It forms extensive beds near the surface of the earth in arid regions. Trona is an important source of soda ash (sodium carbonate), which is used in making glass, soap, paper, and other products.
Conventional Continuous Mining Method:
The conventional continuous mining method is a type of surface mining that involves extracting minerals from the earth's surface by means of longwall and room & pillar mines. This method is used to mine all types of rocks and can be used for open-pit or underground operations. The conventional continuous mining process has been in use since the late 1800s, when it was first implemented at a large scale in Europe.
Room Mining Method:
The room mining method is used to estimate the quantity of recoverable minerals in a particular area. It involves drilling test holes and determining the dimensions of rooms and corridors between them. The method helps determine if there are any large reserves or small veins that can be mined more profitably by using advanced techniques such as hydraulic fracturing or fracking.
Application Insights:
The power application segment led the global market and accounted for more than 40% of the total revenue share in 2017. Trona is used as a desiccant, refrigerant, and wetting agent in power plants. It is also used as a material for manufacturing carbon dioxide ice machines that are utilized to cool down turbine generators at coal-fired power plants.
