Market Overview:
The global wood-tar fraction market is estimated to be valued at US$ XX Mn in 2018 and is projected to reach US$ XX Mn by 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of X.X%. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for wood-tar fraction in construction coatings, ship coatings, animal husbandry and other applications. On the basis of type, resinous tars are expected to account for a major share of the global wood-tar fraction market during the forecast period. This can be attributed to their superior properties such as weathering resistance and adhesion. Hardwood tars are also anticipated to witness significant growth during the forecast period owing to their high solvency power and low volatility. Other tars are expected to account for a minor share of the global wood-tar fraction market during the forecast period. Based on application, construction coatings is anticipated hold a dominant position in terms of revenue contribution throughoutthe forecast period followed by ship coatings.
Product Definition:
Wood-tar fraction is a water soluble, dark brown liquid which is a by-product of the wood distillation process. It is used as an antiseptic, disinfectant and in the manufacture of dyes and other chemicals.
Resinous Tars:
Resinous tars is a product that results from the distillation of wood at a temperature greater than 200oC. It consists of highly concentrated tar, which is usually VOC-free and contains low molecular weight substances such as waxes, resins, and other hydrocarbons. Resinous tars are used in several end-use industries including furniture manufacturing, flooring industry for producing hardwood floors or laminates and also find application in construction industry for waterproofing purposes.
Hardwood Tars:
Hardwood tars are organic compounds found in the heart of hardwood trees. They are also known as turpentine or pine oil. It is a semi-solid form that consists of 76% to 80% saturated fat, 10% to 15% protein and 2 % to 3 % carbohydrates by dry weight basis. The product has high demand from furniture industry owing to its durability, water resistance and luster retention properties when used for manufacturing wood furniture such as cabinets, drawers etc.
Application Insights:
The construction coatings segment led the global wood-tar fraction market and accounted for more than 45.0% share of the overall revenue in 2017. The growth of this application segment is attributed to increasing demand from residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects across the globe. Wood-tar fraction is used as a binder in waterproofing membranes during construction activities which aid in preventing moisture penetration into supporting structures such as beams, columns, or walls resulting into preservation of building materials such as timbers & concrete coverings.
Wood-tar products are also used for coating masonry surfaces including bricks & stones making them water repellent thereby enhancing their durability against harsh environmental conditions such as high humidity and temperature over long periods of time without getting damaged or worn off easily.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global wood-tar fraction market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth of this region can be attributed to increasing construction spending along with growing industrialization in emerging economies such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. In addition, rising awareness regarding environment protection coupled with stringent regulations by regulatory bodies such as REACH are anticipated to drive industry demand over the forecast period.
The Asia Pacific was followed by Europe which accounted for a share of 22% in terms of volume in 2017 owing to high demand from countries including Russia and Germany. Increasing shipbuilding activities coupled with growing automotive industry is projected to augment product consumption across this region during the forecast period. North America emerged as third largest regional segment accounting for a share of 17% due to high consumption from U S A .
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from construction and infrastructure sectors
- Growing use of wood-tar fraction in paints, coatings, and adhesives
- Rising popularity of wood-tar fraction in personal care products
- Increasing demand for bio-based products over petrochemical based products
- Technological advancements that improve the quality and performance of wood-tar fraction
