Product Definition:


Zirconia is a very hard ceramic material that is often used to make dental implants and other dental devices. It is also used to make knife blades, ball bearings, and other high-performance parts.


Hydrothermal Method:


The hydrothermal method is used to produce high purity zirconium and has a yield of 99%. It is the most cost-effective way to obtain zirconium. The method uses water as a reactant along with potassium (K) hydroxide or sodium (Na) hydroxide solution which acts as the catalyst. The mixture gets heated under controlled conditions, which melt Zr(OH)4 producing pure metal.


Precipitation Method:


Precipitation method is used to obtain zirconium tetrachloride and other products of the reaction between zirconium trichloride and tetrachloroethylene. It is a basic process in the production of industrial chemicals. The method involves four steps which are; preparation of feedstock, addition of catalyst, generation of vapor phase, and collection as final product.


Application Insights:


The application segment includes biomaterials, mechanical components, automotive exhaust treatment, wear-resistant products, and others. The biomaterials application segment led the global market in 2017 accounting for a share of more than 40% in terms of revenue. This is attributed to increasing demand from various end-use industries including medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
