Market Overview:
The global Hafnium Metals market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for hafnium metals in high-temperature turbines, aerospace, plasma cutting inserts, plastics manufacturing, nuclear power generation and microelectronics and communications applications. Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing region during the forecast period followed by Europe and North America.
Product Definition:
Hafnium is a chemical element with symbol Hf and atomic number 72. A lustrous, silvery gray, tetravalent transition metal, it is found in nature only in combined form. Hafnium is the penultimate member of the actinide series and is the most corrosion-resistant metal known. It has been used as a zirconium substitute in reactor fuel cladding because of its excellent resistance to corrosion by high-temperature neutrons; however, this application has been discontinued due to concerns over potential damage to nuclear reactors by hafnium's neutron absorption properties.
Foil:
Foil is a thin, flexible sheet of metal. It can be used in various applications such as batteries and semiconductors. The growth factor for foil is the same as that of hafnium metals - it has high melting point and low density. In comparison to hafnium metals, however, its usage factor is much higher since there are no major substitutes available on the market at present time (2019).
Lump:
Lump is a naturally occurring mineral and it's also called as baddeleyite or wollastonite. It has a hardness of 3.5-4 on Mohs scale and specific gravity of 2.7-3.2 which makes it denser than most other minerals including hafnium, zirconium, silicon carbide, calcium carbonate etc.
Application Insights:
The high-temperature turbines application segment accounted for the largest market share in 2017 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of XX% over the forecast period. The rising demand for energy from thermal power plants across various regions, including Asia Pacific, North America, and Europe on account of growing population and urbanization is expected to drive the product demand over the forecast period.
Aerospace was another prominent segment accounting for a significant market share in terms of revenue as well as volume in 2017 owing to increasing use of hf metals such as molybdenum, rhenium, tungsten and others which are essential ingredients for manufacturing aerospace grade alloys. In addition, increasing use of lightweight materials such as aluminum alloys along with wind turbines will further boost industry growth over the coming years.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The presence of key manufacturers in China, Japan, South Korea and India coupled with increasing demand from end-use industries such as aerospace & defense, electronics manufacturing, automotive and energy industries are some of the major factors contributing to regional growth.
The growing nuclear power generation sector coupled with rising investments by countries such as Russia for expanding their electricity generation capacities is anticipated to augment Hafnium metal demand in nuclear applications. North America region accounted for a significant share owing to high consumption levels of microelectronics components mainly used in consumer electronic products such as smartphones and laptops and other small devices manufactured by companies including Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sony Corporation among others which use hf metals on large scale basis.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the electronics and automotive industries for hafnium-based alloys as a substitute for traditional materials such as copper, aluminum, and steel in various applications
- Growing demand for hafnium oxide in optical devices used in fiber-optic communication systems
- Rising use of hafnium nanoparticles in biomedicine and other nanotechnology applications
- Increasing popularity of hafnium-containing dental implants and other medical implants
- Growing research interest in the potential use of hafnium compounds as catalysts for chemical processes
