Aromatic hydrocarbon resins are a class of synthetic resin that is derived from aromatic hydrocarbons. These resins are used in adhesives, sealants, and coatings. They are important because they provide high-quality performance properties such as flexibility, toughness, and chemical resistance.


Thermal Polymerization Method:


The thermal polymerization method is used to produce high-performance thermoplastics by using heat as a catalyst. The process takes place at temperatures greater than 200OC and less than 300OC. This method is majorly used for producing polyether ketone (PEEK) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS).


Catalytic Polymerization Method:


The catalytic polymerization method is used to produce high-purity aromatic hydrocarbon resins by using a catalyst. The most commonly used catalysts are platinum, rhodium, palladium and iridium on silica support. This method provides several advantages over the conventional thermal or oxidative methods for producing aromatics; it produces higher yields with lower feedstock wastage and offers economic viability in terms of cost of final product.
