2-Bromopropionic Acid:


2-bromopropionic acid is a halogenated derivative of propionic acid. It has a molecular weight of 308 and its salts are called bromopropionates. Brominated derivatives have gained wide acceptance as flame retardants owing to their ability to reduce the flammability of organic compounds, thus making them suitable for industrial applications such as textiles, plastics, coatings & paints and cleaning products among others.


3-Bromopropionic Acid:


3-Bromopropionic acid also known as 3-BrPA is a organic compound that is soluble in water and EtOH. It has a slight odor of bromine and tastes slightly sweet. This acid can be made by the reaction between propionic acid and bromine in the presence of calcium carbonate or sodium carbonate as catalyst. The yield from this reaction is very low, around 15% to 20%.

Bromopropionic acid is used as a raw material in the manufacture of several drugs including succinylcholine chloride and erythromycin base.
