COB Encapsulant is a material used to protect and seal the chip-on-board (COB) assembly. The encapsulant prevents moisture and other contaminants from entering the assembly, which could damage or destroy the electronics. It also provides protection from physical damage.


Silicone:


Silicone is a widely used material in the formulation of COB encapsulants. It has been observed that silicone-based COB encapsulant formulations have better thermal stability as compared to other materials such as PCTFE, PVC and polyolefins. Also, they offer good mechanical strength and gas barrier properties which make them suitable for use in high power electronics such as LEDs and solar cells among others.


Epoxy:


Epoxy is a polymer and has high resistance to chemicals, heat, and solvents. It is widely used in the encapsulation of electronic products such as IC chips owing to its superior sealing property. Epoxy resin-based COB Encapsulant can be used for manufacturing semiconductor devices with different shapes and sizes; however, it must be able to completely cover the surface of an integrated circuit (IC).
