Market Overview:
The global condensed silica fume (CSF) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The CSF market is segmented on the basis of type, application and region. On the basis of type, the CSF market is segmented into densified silica fume, semi-densified silica fume and undensified silica fume. The densified silica fume segment is expected to hold a major share in the CSF market during the forecast period owing to its superior properties as compared to other types of CSFs. On the basis of application, concrete accounts for a major share in terms of volume consumption followed by refractory and others applications respectively.
Product Definition:
1. CSF is a by-product of the silicon smelting process and is created when molten silicon comes into contact with oxygen.
2. The main component of CSF is SiO2, making it an ideal reinforcement agent for concrete and other cement-based products due to its high compressive strength and resistance to alkali-silica reaction (ASR).
Densified Silica Fume:
Densified silica fume is a solid, non-flammable and non-corrosive material. It consists of silyl modified polymers in the form of fibers which are extensively used as an insulating mat in various high temperature applications such as refractory linings, heat resistant coatings and ceramic glazes. Densified silica fume is also utilized for its superior thermal shock resistance properties to provide protection against extreme temperature changes during transportation or storage.
Semi Densified Silica Fume:
Semi densified silica fume (SDSF) is a by-product of the semiconductor industry. It contains silicon and germanium in an amorphous solid state. SDSF has applications as a source of silicon for the fabrication of integrated circuits (IC), as an insulating material, and in other processes where high purity is required.
The global semi densified silica fume market size was valued at USD 537 million in 2016.
Application Insights:
The concrete application segment led the global condensed silica fume market in 2017 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of XX% over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing construction activities across developing countries, such as China, India and Brazil. These products are used for various applications in the building & construction industry including flooring, wall lining & coating, roofing underlayment and insulation.
The refractory application segment was valued at USD 544 million in 2017 owing to its wide scale use as an industrial material that provides resistance against high temperatures during manufacturing of ceramic tiles and cement products from fireclay or shale minerals. Condensed silicafumes help reduce dust generation while working up quarry materials into a smooth finished product by reducing impurities present like silt etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global condensed silica fume market in terms of both volume and revenue. The growth is majorly attributed to rapid industrialization, which has led to an increase in construction activities across the region. In addition, rising demand for refractory metals from various end-use industries such as steel manufacturing and cement production is expected to drive industry expansion over the forecast period.
The Asia Pacific CSF market was valued at USD X million in 2017 and is anticipated to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to a rise in construction spending along with growing steel production capacity across key economies such as China and India. Furthermore, economic development coupled with increasing per capita disposable income levels will also support regional product demand during the same period.
Growth Factors:
- Growing demand from end-use industries such as construction and automotive due to its superior properties such as high strength, thermal insulation, and resistance to corrosion.
- Increasing use of CSF in concrete production as a replacement for traditional materials such as sand and gravel due to its ability to improve the quality of concrete while reducing the overall cost of production.
- Rising awareness among consumers about the benefits of using CSF in various applications which is expected to boost demand over the forecast period.
- Technological advancements that have led to development of new products with enhanced performance characteristics is likely to create opportunities for market growth over the next few years.
