Market Overview:
The global ethylbenzene market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for styrene from various end-use industries, such as automotive and construction. Ethylbenzene is used as a precursor for the production of styrene, which is widely used in manufacturing various plastic products. In addition, ethylbenzene finds application in other chemical production processes, such as alkylation and aromatization. These factors are expected to drive the growth of the global ethylbenzene market during the forecast period. On basis of type, the global ethylene benzenemarket can be segmented into three categories: AlCl3 liquid hydrocarbon method, zeolite gas catalystic method and zeolite liquid catalystic method. Of these segments, the AlCl3 liquid hydrocarbonmethod currently dominatesthe marketand isexpectedtogrow at a CAGRof 5%during therestof thereportperiod .
Product Definition:
Ethylbenzene is an organic compound with the formula C6H5CH2. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and ethanol. Ethylbenzene occurs naturally as a component of crude oil and natural gas. It is produced industrially by the catalytic reforming of naphtha.
AlCl3 Liquid Hydrocarbon Method:
AlCl3 liquid hydrocarbon method is used to separate and purify ethylbenzene in petroleum refinery. This process involves the use of a catalyst, which enables separation of benzene from ethylbenzene. The by-product obtained in this process is named as “Alcohol”.
Zeolite Gas Catalystic Method:
The zeolite gas catalytic method is a process used for the production of ethylbenzene. It involves the use of solid oxide catalyst, which is generally generated by mixing potassium or sodium metal with silica sand. The mixture is then heated at a high temperature to generate gases such as oxygen and hydrogen, along with other products such as calcium sulfide and water.
Application Insights:
The global ethylbenzene market has been segmented on the basis of application into styrene production, chemical production, and other applications such as pharmaceuticals and dyes. Styrene is a key intermediate in the manufacture of plastics and resins which are used to produce various products including polystyrene (PS) foams, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), synthetic rubber, adhesives & sealants as well as coatings.
Styrene production dominated the global ethylbenzene demand accounting for over 45% of total consumption in 2015. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand from emerging economies such as China India Indonesia Vietnam etcetera for manufacturing styrenics based products that are widely used across several end-use industries globally due to their durability & high performance at a lower cost than natural materials like wood or bone china.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest regional segment accounting for over 45% of the global ethylbenzene market in 2016. The region is expected to witness significant growth on account of rising demand from various end-use industries including plastic, chemical and others. China emerged as a major consumer in this region owing to its large population coupled with high economic development.
North America witnessed moderate growth on account of stringent government regulations regarding VOC emissions resulting into low demand for Zeolites based products in this region. However, strict government regulations have not hampered innovation and instead have spurred new product developments by companies such as Honeywell International Inc., which has led to an increase in consumption since 2011 when these new products were introduced globally.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, and plastics is expected to drive the ethylbenzene market growth.
- Rising demand for high-quality products with better performance is also projected to fuel the ethylbenzene market growth in the near future.
- Stringent environmental regulations pertaining to VOCs emissions are likely to create opportunities for ethylbenzene producers in the coming years.
- Growing investments in R&D activities for developing new applications of ethylbenzene is anticipated to open up new avenues for this market during the forecast period.
