Market Overview:
The global hospital waste management market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The market growth is attributed to the increasing awareness about the safe disposal of hospital waste and stringent government regulations for the same. Based on type, the incineration segment is expected to hold the largest share of the global hospital waste management market in 2018. This segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this segment can be attributed to factors such as growing demand for energy-efficient technologies and rising concerns about environmental pollution caused by traditional methods of disposing medical wastes such as landfilling and burning. Based on application, infectious waste accounted for the largest share of the global hospital waste management market in 2017 and this trend is expected continue duringthe forecast period.
Product Definition:
Hospital Waste Management is the process of collecting, sorting, treating and disposing of waste generated by hospitals. It is important because it helps to protect patients, staff and the environment from the risks associated with medical waste.
Incineration:
Incineration is a waste management process where the organic and non-organic wastes are converted into gases by heat. The gases produced are known as flue gas, which comprises of around 99% of carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen along with other trace elements.
Incineration is an effective method to reduce the volume of waste as it reduces landfills by 90%. It also helps in reducing greenhouse emissions as compared to traditional methods such as landfill or biodegradable waste disposal.
Autoclaves:
An autoclave is a sterilization device used to kill or remove microorganisms. The most common types of autoclaves are steam autoclaves and dry heat autoclaves. Autoclaving is the process of using sterile conditions to sterilize medical waste, surgical instruments, pharmaceutical drugs or any other type of infected items which cannot be treated with radiation methods.
Autoclavable containers are used in hospitals for various purposes such as storing/preserving medicines.
Application Insights:
The general waste segment held the largest share of 33.3% in 2017. The growing volume of general hospital wastes is primarily due to an increase in the number of hospitals and a rise in their bed capacity at any point of time. According to WHO, there was an average annual growth rate of 5% from 2015 to 2016 for all types combined, which includes government, military and non-government facilities providing healthcare services globally.
Hospitality industry is one such sector that generates large amount of waste that needs proper disposal methods for its safe handling and transportation without creating environmental hazards during its journey from production unit till it reaches final destination or disposal site.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global hospital waste management market in 2017 and is expected to maintain its position over the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing awareness regarding proper hospital waste management, rising investments by governments in developing healthcare infrastructure, and growing population with high unmet needs in emerging economies such as India and China. In addition, economic development coupled with rapid urbanization has led to an increase in healthcare spending which is further driving growth across this region.
The Asia Pacific region comprises of developing countries such as India, China & Japan that are rapidly adopting western culture of living along with industrialization & urbanization resulting into increased medical tourism for advanced treatments at a cheaper cost. These factors are anticipated to drive demand for better disposal systems over the forecast period thereby boosting revenue generation across this region.
