Market Overview:

The global human milk oligosaccharides in infant formula market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth of this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for premium and organic infant formulas, rising awareness about the benefits of human milk oligosaccharides for infants, and growing number of working women. However, stringent regulatory norms regarding the use of additives in infant formulas may restrain the growth of this market to some extent. On the basis of type, 2’FL is projected to be the fastest-growing segment during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. This can be attributed to its high nutritional value and health benefits for infants.

Global Human Milk Oligosaccharides in Infant Formula Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMO) are a type of prebiotic that play an important role in the development and health of infants. They are not found in cow's milk or other animal milks, but are present in human breast milk. HMOs help to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which can support good health throughout life. They also help to protect infants from infection and may improve cognitive development.

2’FL:

2'FL is the second most abundant form of human milk oligosaccharides (HMO). It was first detected in human milk and has been identified as one of the factors that contribute to its high levels found in breast-fed infants. 2'FL is a type of HMO, which can be distinguished from other forms by its chemical structure.

3’FL:

3' - Flucosidase is an enzyme, which hydrolyzes lactose to form galactose and fructose. Human milk contains a high concentration of 3' - flucosidase (10-15% of total protein) that efficiently catalyzes the hydrolysis of lactose into various monosaccharides.

Application Insights:

On the basis of application, the global infant formula market has been segmented into infant formula, functional food & beverages, food/medical supplements and other applications. The infant formula segment accounted for more than 50% of the overall share in 2017. This is attributed to increasing demand for specific composition baby formulas that are designed to meet individual needs of infants.

Functional foods & beverages is expected to be one of the fastest-growing segments over the forecast period owing to rising consumer awareness regarding health benefits associated with these products coupled with a growing preference for healthy lifestyle practices among consumers globally.

Food/medical supplements are expected to witness significant growth over next six years due largely on increased product usage as nutritional support in disease management.

Regional Analysis:

North America dominated the global market in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its position during the forecast period owing to high demand for human milk oligosaccharides and increasing awareness about their benefits. In addition, growing number of product launches in U.S., due to increased consumer preference for natural products, is also one of the major factors driving growth in this region.

Major players operating in this industry include Danone S.A.; Abbott; Mead Johnson & Company; Horizon Organic Dairy Inc.; WhiteWave Foods Co-operative; Avantor Performance Materials Inc.; Earth's Own Milk Ltd.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing awareness about the benefits of human milk oligosaccharides in infant formula among parents and healthcare professionals.
  • Rising demand for organic and premium infant formulas that contain human milk oligosaccharides.
  • Growing number of women who are choosing to breastfeed their infants for health benefits, which is driving the demand for human milk oligosaccharides in infant formula products.
  • increasing research on the benefits of human milk oligosaccharides in infant formula, which is likely to result in more product launches over the next few years.
