Market Overview:
The global inorganic polymers market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for inorganic polymers from various end-use industries such as aerospace and defense, building and construction, electronics, industrial, medical, personal care and others. In addition, the growing awareness about the benefits of inorganic polymers is also contributing to the growth of this market. Some of the key players operating in this market are Momentive Performance Materials Inc., Saint-Gobain S.A., 3M Company and Asahi Glass Co.
Product Definition:
Inorganic polymers are synthetic materials made of inorganic (non-carbon) elements, such as silicon, germanium, and titanium. They have many applications in industry, including semiconductors, optical fibers and coatings for windows and other surfaces.
Silicones:
Silicones are polymers of silicon and oxygen. They are produced by the polymerization of a di-functional monomer, which contains both silicon and oxygen units. The most commonly used di-functional monomer is tetraethylene glycol (TEG). TEG is reacted with various other compounds such as diethyl carbonate or methacrylate to produce silicone polymers.
Graphite:
graphite is a form of carbon with an extremely rare earth ionic compound. The most common forms of graphite are produced from the suspension reaction between molten salts and coal tar, followed by drying and cooling. Graphite occurs in two major types: natural graphite (NG) and synthetic or lab-grown graphite (LG).
Application Insights:
The aerospace and defense application segment led the global inorganic polymers market in 2017. The segment is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing use of composites for manufacturing aircraft body parts, which are lightweight and strong. In addition, rising demand for high-performance materials with superior mechanical properties is expected to drive growth over the coming years.
Building and construction was the second largest application segment that accounted for 24% of global revenue share in 2017. Rising urbanization leading to increased building structures across developing economies including China India & Brazil is anticipated to boost product demand from 2018 onward. In addition, rising use of lightweight materials with superior strength properties will further propel industry expansion over the coming years as construction activities progress globally.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global inorganic polymers market and accounted for over 45% of the total revenue share in 2016. The region is expected to witness significant growth on account of rapid industrialization, coupled with increasing demand from key end-use industries such as aerospace and defense, electronics, automotive, building and construction.
The growing population along with rising living standards have spurred consumer spending on personal care products such as skin creamers and shampoos which has resulted into high demand for packaging materials including bottles made from boron polymers. Rising disposable income levels are also anticipated to drive product adoption across emerging economies thereby supporting regional market growth over the forecast period.
Europe was estimated at USD X million in 2016 owing to presence of major aircraft manufacturers including Airbus S A., Leonardo Helicopters Ltd., AgustaWestland Ltd.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as automotive, construction, and packaging
- Growing awareness about the benefits of inorganic polymers over traditional materials
- Rising investments by key players in research and development activities to develop new products
- Proliferation of nanotechnology-based inorganic polymers that offer better performance and durability
- Stringent environmental regulations encouraging the use of sustainable materials
