Market Overview:
The global marine radar market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for maritime security and safety, rising number of cruise ships, and increase in trade activities across different regions. Based on type, the global marine radar market is segmented into X band radar and S band radar. The X band radar segment is expected to hold a larger share of the market during the forecast period owing to its high detection range and better performance in adverse weather conditions as compared to S band radars. Based on application, the global marine radar market is segmented into merchant marine, fishing vessel, yacht/recreational boat, military naval vessel, and other applications. The merchant marine segment accounted for a major share of the global marine radar market in 2017 due to increasing maritime trade activities across different regions.
Product Definition:
A Marine Radar is a device used on boats and ships to detect objects in the water surrounding the vessel. Marine Radars emit pulses of microwave energy that reflect off objects in the water and are then received by the Radar antenna. The time it takes for the pulse to be transmitted and reflected back can be used to calculate the distance between the object and ship. Marine Radars can also display a graphical representation of what is being seen on a screen, allowing operators to identify potential hazards.
X Band Radar:
X-band radar is a type of radar system used for detecting ships and boats. It operates in the X-band between 30 GHz to 300 GHz. The term “X band” is often used interchangeably with the term “high bandwidth” which can be either general or specific, depending on context. A high bandwidth (HB) X-band radar system has an ability to detect targets at a range of up to approximately 60 miles (100 km).
S Band Radar:
S band radar is a type of radar system used for detecting ships and other marine objects. It operates in the S-band which has a frequency between 3 to 6 GHz. The range of this S band radar is about 150 Km with an accuracy of about 30 Km.
Application Insights:
The military and naval application segment dominated the global marine radar market in 2017, accounting for a revenue share of over 45%. The segment is expected to witness significant growth on account of increasing defense expenditure by countries such as China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. These countries are investing heavily in developing their maritime capabilities owing to increased tension between major powers resulting in rise in border issues. This factor is likely to fuel the demand for advanced radar systems during the forecast period.
The fishing vessel application segment accounted for a significant revenue share within merchant marine applications and was valued at USD 281 million in 2017 due to high adoption rate among large commercial fishermen operating across various regions including North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global marine radar market in terms of revenue share in 2017. The growth is attributed to the presence of prominent players such as Raytheon Company; Lockheed Martin Corporation; and General Dynamics, Inc. Moreover, increasing demand for cruise ships across U.S., Canada, and Mexico has led to an increase in shipbuilding activities which is expected to drive regional product demand over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific region is anticipated to witness significant growth over the next eight years owing to rising maritime disputes & accidents coupled with growing terrorist threats at sea that have compelled governments across countries including China and India are increasingly focusing on strengthening their naval capabilities are likely boost regional product demand over the forecast period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for marine radar systems from the commercial shipping sector to enhance navigational safety.
- Proliferation of advanced digital signal processing technologies that offer enhanced performance and features in marine radar systems.
- Growing popularity of maritime surveillance and security applications requiring the deployment of marine radars for coastal and port security purposes.
- Rising investments by governments worldwide in upgrading their naval fleets with advanced radar systems capable of detecting stealth targets at long ranges 5
