Market Overview:
The global medical waste disposal market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The market growth is attributed to the increasing awareness about safe medical waste disposal and the stringent regulations by governments across the globe. The market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, incineration dominates the market with a share of more than 50%. This can be attributed to its ability to destroy all types of medical waste in a single step.
Product Definition:
Medical waste disposal is the process of getting rid of medical waste in a safe and effective manner. This includes things like needles, bandages, and other items that could pose a danger to people or the environment if not disposed of properly. It is important to dispose of medical waste properly because it can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and other toxins that can be dangerous to people and the environment.
Incineration:
Incineration is a waste management process where the organic and non-hazardous waste are treated by heat to temperatures greater than 300o C. The purpose of incineration is to reduce the volume of waste and secure its quality for safe disposal. Incinerators are used in both public & private sectors including hospitals, nursing homes, residential complexes, hotels & restaurants among others.
Autoclaves:
An autoclave is a device used to sterilize medical waste. It consists of a container, which is usually made of stainless steel and glass or plastic. The waste is placed in the container and then heated to a temperature, which can kill all types of microorganisms. These containers are also known as steam autoclaves because they use steam instead of hot water as a medium for sterilization; however, most modern day devices use both hot water and steam for effective results.
Application Insights:
The general medical waste disposal market is categorized on the basis of application into infectious waste, hazardous waste, radioactive waste and other wastes. The other wastes segment includes surgical gloves, hypodermic syringes and catheters, pharmaceutical packaging materials that are either bio- or non-biohazardous in nature. General medical wastes are further divided into surgical swabs/dressing changes & patient transfers (in case of hospitals), normal hygiene procedures (such as shaving) performed during the course of daily hospital life and pharmaceuticals/biologicals that are no longer required at the time of treatment or diagnosis.
The infectious diseases segment dominated this industry with a share estimated at 33.1% in 2017 owing to an increase in healthcare facilities across developing countries such as China India Indonesia Malaysia Philippines Singapore Thailand Vietnam Africa Brazil etc., coupled with a rise in prevalence levels for various types of infections such as HIV AIDS etc.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its position during the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing awareness regarding proper medical waste management, rising investments for improving healthcare infrastructure, and stringent government regulations regarding disposal of medical waste.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness a lucrative growth rate over the forecast period owing to factors such as developing healthcare infrastructure and growing patient population in countries such as India, China, Japan & Australia coupled with increasing number of surgeries per year. In addition, economic development in this region will boost demand for medical services which will further drive growth during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030 (estimated).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for medical waste disposal services from hospitals and clinics
- Rising awareness about the importance of safe and hygienic medical waste disposal among healthcare professionals and patients
- Stringent government regulations on medical waste management
- Growing number of private players in the medical waste disposal market
- Technological advancements in medical waste disposal equipment and processes
