Market Overview:
The global plant oil market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for biofuels and rising awareness about the benefits of plant oils. Based on type, palm oil is expected to lead the global plant oil market with a share of 36%. Soybean oil is projected to be the second-largest segment with a share of 27%. Sunflower oil is estimated to account for 15% share in terms of volume, followed by rapeseed (10%), olive (8%) and others (3%). In terms of application, food accounted for majority share in 2017 and it is projected that this trend will continue during forecast period as well. Biofuel segment follows food application with significant growth rate owing to government initiatives taken towards promotion & development renewable fuels across globe.
Product Definition:
A plant oil is a triglyceride extracted from a plant. Plant oils have been used since ancient times as lubricants, fuel, paints, and varnishes. They are also used in food preparation and some medicines.
Palm Oil:
Palm oil is extracted from the fruit pulp of various palm trees, which grow naturally in tropical and subtropical regions. The fruit pulp after extraction is used for producing a variety of products such as cooking oils, soaps, cosmetics & toiletries and biodiesel among others. Palm oil has been considered as one of the most lucrative vegetable oils due to its high demand in industrial applications such as food processing and animal feed production.
Soybean Oil:
Soybean oil is a vegetable oil that is extracted from soybeans. It has become one of the most popular vegetable oils in the world on account of its numerous health benefits. Soybean oil contains various vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, omega 6 & 3 fatty acids, iron, magnesium & calcium among others which have positive effects on human body.
Application Insights:
Food was the largest application segment in 2017 and is projected to witness a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for plant oil-based products such as margarine, shortening, mayonnaise and salad dressings in developed economies including U.S., Germany, France and UK due to growing obesity levels among youth generation there.
Plant oil finds major applications in biofuel manufacturing owing to its high energy content which makes it an ideal raw material for the production of biodiesel and other liquid fuels including fuel gasoil (LPG). Growing awareness regarding environmental issues coupled with government initiatives promoting the use of renewable sources of energy is expected drive demand over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global plant oil market in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The region is home to several emerging economies, including China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia. Rapid industrialization coupled with rising living standards in these countries has resulted in increased consumption of food products as well as biofuels. This trend is expected to have a positive impact on the demand for globally sourced plant oils over the next eight years.
China accounted for approximately 25% of total regional demand on account of high production levels coupled with increasing product use in food applications such as bakery items and confectionery goods owing to growing consumer preferences towards healthy dietary lifestyles within this country.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for plant-based oils in the food and beverage industry as a healthier alternative to traditional oils.
- Rising awareness of the health benefits of plant-based oils, especially among consumers in developed countries.
- Growing demand for biofuels as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
- Rapid expansion of the global middle class, which is driving increased consumption of processed foods and other products that use plant-based oils.
- Technological advancements that are making it easier to produce and process plant-based oils, resulting in lower costs and increased availability
