Market Overview:
The global process fluid market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for process fluids in various applications such as polymerization, catalyst, solvents, cleaners, and others. In terms of type, the paraffinic oils segment is expected to lead the market during the forecast period owing to its properties such as low volatility and high flash point. In terms of application, the polymerization segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR than other segments during the forecast period. North America dominates the global process fluid market followed by Europe and Asia Pacific.
Product Definition:
A process fluid is a liquid or gas that is used to carry out a particular manufacturing or processing operation. The most important function of process fluid is to perform the required task in an efficient and economical manner. In addition, it must be safe for both workers and the environment.
Paraffinic Oils:
Paraffinic oils are a group of mineral-based, light yellow colored vegetable oils. They comprise of very low flash point and high viscosity making them ideal for use in process industries such as petroleum, chemical processing and food industry. Paraffinic oils have been gaining importance on account of their lower cost over the specialty or renewable counterparts.
Naphthenic Oils:
Naphthenic oils are used as process fluids in the manufacturing of paints, coatings, varnishes and inks. They have a high content of naphthenic acid which is an organic liquid derived from crude oil. The product has low viscosity and is clear with a mild odor. It has similar properties as compared to paraffin waxes but contains higher proportion of acid value.
Application Insights:
The polymerization application segment accounted for the largest revenue share in 2016 and is projected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for polymers, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, high-density polyethylene and others in various industries including automotive & transportation.
Polymerization requires a catalyst that functions as an agent that promotes or enables chemical reactions without being involved in them directly. These catalysts are required to carry out multiple polymerizations at the same time with high efficiency while minimizing costs and environmental pollution. Thus, rising demand for these catalysts from various end-use industries is expected to drive global POF consumption over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth of this region can be attributed to rising product demand from various end-use industries, such as paints & coatings, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and others. China is one of the largest producers and consumers of these oils across this region owing to easy availability of raw materials coupled with cheap labor costs.
The presence of numerous small-scale manufacturers in emerging economies such as India has led to a significant increase in local content for polymers across this region. This factor will also contribute toward increasing regional demand for process fluids over the next eight years. North America emerged as a major consumer due to high consumption levels from end-use industries including automotive and construction sectors on account of cold weather conditions that require application specific lubricants (ASL).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the end-user industries for better quality products and efficient production processes
- Growing awareness about the benefits of using process fluids in various industrial applications
- Rising investments by companies in research and development to develop new and innovative process fluids
- Proliferation of small and medium-sized enterprises that are increasingly adopting process fluids for their operations
- Technological advancements that are resulting in the development of more efficient and user-friendly process fluid management systems
