The global seed treatment additives market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The market is segmented by type, application, and region. The type segment is further divided into insecticides, fungicides, biologics, and others. The application segment includes cereals & grains, oilseeds & pulses, other crops and others. Geographically the market is segmented into North America, Latin America Europe Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa (MEA). The growth of the seed treatment additives market can be attributed to factors such as rising demand for food due to population growth coupled with increasing income levels in developing countries; adoption of modern agricultural practices such as use of treated seeds; stringent regulations for food safety;.
Product Definition:
Seed treatment additives are products that are applied to seeds in order to improve their germination, protect them from pests and diseases, or enhance their growth. They can be made from organic or synthetic materials, and come in a variety of forms including powders, liquids, gels, and pastes.
Insecticides:
Insecticides are chemicals used to kill or inhibit the growth of insects. They can be used in both synthetic and natural forms. Insecticides can be classified as contact, systemic, and non-systemic insecticides. Contact insecticide is applied directly to the pest with the help of a sprayer or by hand; it gets into direct contact with pests body parts causing death or disruption to their functioning.
Fungicides:
Fungicides are chemicals used to kill fungi. Fungi are responsible for causing diseases in plants. Some of the common fungal infections include rust, blights, and mildews. The most commonly used fungicides are synthetic and semi-synthetic organic compounds that function by blocking the cell wall of fungi with high molecular weight (polymers). They can be either applied to seeds before planting or incorporated into soil as a seed treatment additive.

Application Insights:
Cereals and grains held the largest market share of over 50% in terms of volume in 2017. The application is projected to witness a high growth rate on account of rising demand for whole grain products with reduced levels of gluten, which are being diagnosed as celiac disease across the globe. Moreover, increasing consumption of breakfast cereals owing to their high nutritional value is expected to fuel segment growth during the forecast period.
Oilseeds and pulses accounted for over 15% market share in terms of revenue in 2017 due to rising demand for these crops as food sources across various regions including Asia Pacific and North America. In addition, growing use oilseed crops like soybean & rapeseed along with sunflower & safflower seeds as animal feed additives is anticipated drive product demand from 2018 to 2030 involving major countries such as India, China Japan Brazil etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing awareness among farmers about modern farming techniques, availability of cheap seeds, and government support for promoting exports of agricultural products. The region accounts for nearly 60% of global population and has one-third of the total land area under cultivation. Thus, it is a key player in food production globally as well as an exporter of various agro commodities including oilseeds & pulses, cereals & grains.
The emergence of new emerging economies such as China and India coupled with favorable government policies aimed at boosting domestic consumption will drive demand over the coming years. In addition, rising disposable income levels are anticipated to augment demand from residential sectors further driving overall product consumption across Asia Pacific region during the forecast period (2018 - 2030).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for food due to population growth
- Rising awareness about the benefits of seed treatment additives among farmers
- Technological advancements in the field of seed treatment additives
- Growing demand for quality seeds and crop protection products
- Expansion of the agricultural sector in developing countries
