Market Overview:
The global subsea pumping system market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for oil and gas across the globe. Additionally, the increase in exploration and production activities in deepwater and ultra-deepwater regions is also contributing to the growth of this market. The helical axial flow type pumping system segment is expected to dominate the global subsea pumping system market during the forecast period. This segment accounted for a majority share of the global subsea pumping system market in 2017 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2018 to 2030.
Product Definition:
A subsea pumping system is a device that is used to pump fluid from one location to another. The fluid may be oil, gas, or water. The subsea pumping system may be used to transfer the fluid from a well on land to an offshore production platform, or it may be used to transfer the fluid between different parts of an offshore production platform.
Helical Axial Flow Type Pumping System:
Helical axial flow (HAF) is a subsea pumping system, which uses centrifugal force to move fluids. The pump impellers are mounted at the center of a three-dimensional rotor with its axis horizontal and its rotation powered by electric motors. As the fluid is pushed out from the center, it flows in an anticlockwise direction around the perimeter of the rotor and then returns towards its original position due to natural tendency of fluids to go towards lowest point.
Twin Screw Type Pumping System:
A twin screw type pumping system is a closed circulation pump system which consists of two independent rotating screws mounted together to form a cross-flow. The advantage of this type of pumping system is that it can be used for both offshore and onshore applications, thus making it one of the most preferred systems in the market.
The major application areas where twin screw pumps are used include subsea oil & gas production, refining, processing and transportation as well as petrochemical plants.
Application Insights:
The global subsea pumping system market is segmented by application into subsea boosting, subsea separation, subsea injection and gas compression. The surging demand for crude oil from the Middle East and Africa to feed refineries has resulted in an increased number of wells across the region. This factor is anticipated to boost the use of these systems in future thereby driving their demand over the forecast period.
Substantial investment made by various companies including Siemens Gamesa, Fluids & Power Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and ABB for developing new technologies that improve operational efficiency is expected to drive product demand in near future. For instance, Siemens¢â‚¬â„¢ recent development of a turbine with integrated pump that can be deployed at depths up to 300 m below sea level represents a significant technological advancement enabling cost-effective deployment even at extreme depths.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific region dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The presence of major oil & gas E&P companies such as Total SA, ExxonMobil Corp., China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), and ConocoPhillips; coupled with increasing government support for offshore projects in countries such as India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia etc.; are some of the factors anticipated to drive regional growth.
The Middle East & Africa is estimated to be the fastest-growing regional market from 2018 to 2030 owing to increasing exploration activities off coast of Angola and Nigeria along with growing demand for oil across various industries including automotive industry. Moreover subsea separation applications are witnessing significant growth due to ongoing developments in unconventional hydrocarbon resources development which includes shale gas reserves found under deepwater Gulf of Mexico shelf area that can be utilized using modern helical axial flow subsea pumping systems technology.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for oil and gas due to population growth and industrialization
- Rising investment in offshore drilling and production activities
- Proliferation of subsea infrastructure projects worldwide
- Technological advancements in subsea pumping systems that improve performance and efficiency
- Growing awareness about the benefits of using subsea pumping systems among end users
