Product Definition:


Tetramethylene sulfone is a white odorless crystalline powder that is soluble in organic solvents. It is used as a solvent, an intermediate in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals, and as a flame retardant.


Anhydrous Type:


Anhydrous type is a special type of Tetramethylene Sulfone (TMTS) which has no water content. It is also known as dehydrated tetramethylene sulfone or D4. TMDS has applications in polyurethane foams, adhesives & sealants, elastomers and coatings among others owing to its unique properties such as high thermal stability and low volatility.


Aqueous Type:


Aqueous type is a process of producing TMS by the chemical reaction between sulfur and methanol. Aqueous type accounts for more than half of the total production globally. The major application areas include specialty polymers, adhesives & sealants, elastomers/plastics, inks & coatings and rubber chemicals.


Application Insights:


Oil refining was the dominant application segment and accounted for a market share of over 35% in terms of volume as well as revenue in 2017. The product is used to remove sulfur compounds from petroleum products such as diesel, gasoline, and kerosene. It is also used to produce petrochemicals which are further utilized in various end-use industries including plastics, paints & coatings, lubricants among others.


Polymer processing was the second largest application segment followed by agrochemicals/fertilizers where the product is utilized to provide visco-elastic properties to polymer solutions during emulsion polymerization processes along with other functions such as anti-settling & thickening properties when added directly into liquid formulations without any prior activation or aging process.
