In anaerobic conditions, waste is broken down by special bacteria into gases such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and methane among others.

Aerobic rotating biological contactors are used in the treatment of wastewater. These systems consist of a series of tanks, each with an aeration tank and a separate effluent outlet. The aerobic process involves the breaking down of organic matter by bacteria into carbon dioxide, water, and other end products.
