Market Overview:

The global ultrafine silica fume market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for concrete and refractory products across the globe. Additionally, growing awareness about the benefits of using ultrafine silica fume is also contributing to the growth of this market. On basis of type, densified silica fume held a major share in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period as well. This can be attributed to its superior properties such as high strength, low permeability and resistance against chemical attack when compared with other types of ultrafine silica fumes available in the market.

Global Ultrafine Silica Fume Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Ultrafine Silica Fume is a byproduct of silicon production, consisting of small particles of silicon dioxide (SiO2) in the size range 10-100 nanometers. Ultrafine Silica Fume has been used for many years as an additive to concrete to improve its properties, most notably its strength and durability.

Densified silica fume:

Densified silica fume is a colloidal suspension of ultrafine silica particles. It has high surface area and low volume, which makes it ideal for applications where high surface area is required. Densified silica fume can be used as an alternative to expensive activated carbon in many applications such as pre-treatment of air or gas streams before they are passed through adsorbents or catalysts.

Semi densified silica fume:

Semi densified silica fume (SDSF) is a by-product of the paper making industry. It is produced when wood pulp is semi processed and then treated with sulfuric acid to remove water before being sent for fiberization. The chemical formula of SDSF consists of fine particles that consist mainly of silicon dioxide along with some organic compounds, acids, and minerals.

Application Insights:

Concrete was the dominant application segment and accounted for a revenue share of over 70.0% in 2017. Ultrafine silica fume is widely used in the construction industry as it helps reduce dust generation during concrete mixing, improves workability and reduces shrinkage when curing. It is also used to improve slump resistance, strength, durability and abrasion resistance of concrete while enhancing its permeability for better moisture retention.

Refractory materials are expected to witness significant growth on account of their increasing applications in various industries including steel manufacturing, cement manufacturing etc., Refractory products are majorly used in high temperature industrial processes such as kiln drying & annealing operations where they act as a protective layer against heat damage to the underlying material or structure above it.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific ultrafine silica fume market led the global industry and accounted for over 45% of the total revenue in 2016. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. This can be attributed to growing construction activities, especially in developing countries such as China and India, which are likely to drive product demand across this region. In addition, rising refractory production in Asian countries is anticipated to fuel product demand further.

The Asia Pacific was followed by Europe with a share of around 25%. The growth of this regional market can be attributed to stringent government regulations regarding exposure to toxic gases during manufacturing processes along with implementation of environment-friendly practices by manufacturers operating within this region.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for ultrafine silica fume from end-use industries such as construction, automotive, and aerospace is expected to drive the market growth.
  • Growing awareness about the benefits of using ultrafine silica fume in various applications is projected to fuel the market growth.
  • Rising investments by key players in R&D activities to develop new and innovative products is likely to propel the market growth over the forecast period.
  • Increasing use of ultrafine silica fume in concrete production owing to its superior properties such as high strength, durability, and resistance against corrosion is anticipated to boost demand for this product over the next few years.
