Market Overview:

The global fungal enzyme market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for food and beverage products, pharmaceutical and biomedicine products, feed nutrition products, agricultural products, and industrial products. Fungal enzymes are used in various applications such as food & beverage processing, pharmaceuticals & biomedicine manufacturing, feed production, agriculture production (including biofuel), and industrial processes such as textile processing. The North America region is expected to dominate the global fungal enzyme market during the forecast period owing to the presence of key players in this region and rising demand for processed foods.

Global Fungal Enzyme Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A fungal enzyme is an enzyme that is produced by a fungus. Fungal enzymes are important for the growth and development of fungi, and they can also be used to produce bioproducts.

Alpha-Amylase:

Alpha-amylase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of alpha bonds present in both cellulosic and non-cellulosic polymers. Alpha amylase finds application in various end-use industries such as food & beverages, paper & pulp, biotechnology, animal feed and detergents.

Cellulase:

Cellulase is an enzyme that helps in the digestion of cellulosic material. Cellulose is a natural polymer and an important structural component in plants and some bacteria. Cellulase acts as a catalyst to digest the cellulose which makes it possible for fungi to absorb nutrients from host plants or other microorganisms. The most common form of cellulases are classified into two groups, namely, angiogenic and non-angiogenic based on their functions.

Application Insights:

The food and beverage application segment led the global market in 2017. The product finds a wide range of applications in this sector, including sauces, salad dressings, toppings for ice cream and yogurt, ketchup and other sauces for fast foods & casual restaurants. Alpha-amylase is used to improve the quality of starch hydrolysis products such as dextrins which are used as ingredients in food manufacturing. Cellulose is also degraded into smaller components making it easier for human digestive system to absorb nutrients from foodstuffs. This process also helps reduce flatulence caused due to short chain fatty acids (SCFA).

Regional Analysis:

North America dominated the global market in 2017. The growth is attributed to the presence of a large number of key players, high awareness levels regarding health and hygiene, and easy access to quality products. Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to increasing product demand from various end-use industries such as food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, agriculture & horticulture, biofuels production along with rapid urbanization and industrialization in this region.

The growing population coupled with rising disposable income has led to an increase in consumer spending on food items which will drive industry expansion over the forecast period.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for biofuels: The increasing demand for biofuels is one of the major growth drivers for the global fungal enzyme market. Fungal enzymes are used in the production of bioethanol and biodiesel, which is further fuelling the growth of this market.
  • Rising awareness about benefits of using fungal enzymes: There is a growing awareness among consumers about the benefits of using fungal enzymes. This is helping to drive the growth of this market.
  • Growing demand from food and beverage industry: The food and beverage industry accounts for a significant share in the global fungal enzyme market. The rising demand from this sector is contributing to its growth.
